Book Review Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
Show Notes

Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring, while over 60 years old, is the fountainhead of the environmental movement. This brave, persistent and intelligent woman, confronted with the intellectual patriarchy and corporate hegemony of 1950’s and 1960’s America, took it upon herself to chronicle the detrimental impact that pesticides and insecticides (most particularly DDT) where having on the human, plant and animal ecosystems of the world. The book illustrates three things; the power of persistence, grit and tenacity, the importance of speaking truth to power, and the fact that despite warnings such as this book, we continue to hurtle unchecked towards a self-created environment crisis.
